If you're considering forking out your hard-earned cash for a Chinese language learning package, then you should listen to what I have to say.

I started learning Chinese way back in 1999 and I have to tell you, it's been a hard and often times demoralizing slog...The typical University system was dry and boring; being based on memorizing thousands of characters in preparation for written exams..

When I began, there was nothing like the variety of fun and interactive software/MP3 packages available today. Now it really is possible to learn a Mandarin Chinese by yourself and at your own pace. What's more, it doesn't have to cost you the earth.

At StressLessChinese.com, I hope to save all you wanna-be Chinese learners a lot of time and money, by giving you the truth about what works, what doesn't and what's worth paying for.

Now let me tell you simply:

Rosetta Stone is a great product. It covers the 4 skills of listening, speaking, reading & writing and starts at complete beginner level. It combines audio lessons and software, which focus on really useful language.

But It's SO EXPENSIVE!!   Who wants to pay $359 U.S. for a package they're not sure they really need?

Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese on the other hand is down-right boring. The MP3 lessons will teach you Chinese, if you don't fall asleep first.. What's more, it's just as expensive as Rosetta Stone, though comes with none of the snazzy software. At $209 U.S., it's a waste of money. (Then you have to pay a further $225 U.S. for level II & $225 U.S. for level III.)

Rocket Chinese on the other hand is great value for money, at $100 U.S. It has just as many MP3 lessons as the other two and is full of genuinely useful content. The Mega Vocab & Mega Audio games are a fun and useful way to practice what you've just learned and get an introduction to Chinese characters. The online learners forum also provides a lot of support for beginners.

Basically, Pimsleur is boring while Rosetta Stone is overpriced. Rocket Chinese combines value for money and quality content to take first place.
